Leaps of Faith: Space is Made As You Move

Have you ever watched someone take a leap of faith without fully knowing the outcome?

This summer, I did.

On a crowded train, a couple boarded—with white canes, steady voices, and limited sight. The doors hadn’t opened all the way, so a few people helped them step on. As they moved from the doorway toward the center of the car, something beautiful happened: the crowd made space.

They couldn’t know this particular subway car had room. They moved anyway.

“For we walk by faith, not by sight.” — 2 Corinthians 5:7

As we approached their stop, the husband asked the passengers on the subway car, “Is anyone getting off at the next stop?” People heard him, but silence fell heavy in the subway car. I finally said, “Yes,” and offered to guide them. I walked his wife by the hand through the aisle, escalators, and hallways. It was humbling.

On the way out, she told me they love being on the water and had just finished a boat ride. Her favorite part was the sound of waves crashing against the boat. Even with limited sight, they chose to experience joy. She spoke lightly, like someone who had accepted her reality without surrendering wonder. She didn’t pretend away the challenge; she refused to let it define the borders of her life.

They didn’t quit what they loved because of what they lacked. They stuck together, and it worked out.

As we said goodbye, I sensed God’s nudge: life may look one way, but His grace can transform the way you experience it. Tenacity was in the room. They didn't give up. They didn't allow the unknown to keep them from taking a leap of faith.

What this story asks of us

  1. Acknowledge what’s true. You may not see every step; name the limits without bowing to them.

  2. Move with intention. Take the next knowable step; new space often appears while you move.

  3. Receive help. Sometimes “Yes, I’m getting off here—let me guide you,” is both obedience and blessing.

  4. Protect your wonder. Do the thing that keeps your heart alive (their boats, your version of “waves”).

  5. Travel together. Faith and community are companions—don’t do the hard parts alone.
