I Started in The Hallway, But Obedience Opened The Door

The reality is, most of us are waiting for the “right time” to start. We’re waiting until our situation stabilizes, our confidence grows, or our platform is big enough. But what if the right time is right now — in the middle of the chaos, in the hallway, or even in the car?
This week’s vlog was a Get Ready With Me, but as I got ready on the outside, God reminded me of how far He’s brought me and how He started using me before things looked “ready” on the outside.
The Hallway Podcast
My podcasting journey didn't start in a well lit studio or even in my living room. It started in the hallway...literally. Between the second and third floors of my building, you could catch me recording on the top of the stairs with my laptop and mic laid out before me. I would sit on the carpeted steps in hopes that the sound of cars driving past at 3, 4, or 5 in the morning would not get caught on the episodes. It sounds funny to me now when I say it out loud. As a mom of three with a newborn at the time, I had to make it work with what I had. We were in a pandemic and my options were a bit limited from my perspective. No one I really knew was podcasting at the time, so I was walking out on a journey trying to figure out the pieces with what I had.
Can I be honest with you? The space I had to work with was just a fraction of the excuse not to start. The real reason stemmed from doubt and not feeling like I had a worthy story to tell. I tried to give God every reason I could think of to not start, but He kept pressing it on my heart to just do it. After a few months, I finally did and I didn't look back.
I needed to learn to get over myself because God was telling me something He thought could possibly work out. He was telling me what He already knew to be true. That this was apart of the purpose that He had already orchestrated for me. He didn't need my perfection, He needed my yes. My yes to be obedient to what He was calling me to become and to do what He had asked.
Why start now?
The reality is that there won't be a perfect time to start. I remember doing Instacart when I was in Texas on my faith journey. In the store, I was telling God that I didn't mind doing the things He was asking me to do like sharing my story, but I wanted to do it with better conditions. You see I was staying in Airbnb's doing deliveries to create income to have a place to stay each night. I remember His response. It was to start where I was and to allow people to see the progress that was taking place so when things did change they could see how God was able to make a way. He reminded me about movie stars who had been in the industry for years before they finally got their big break. It wasn't that they weren't already in it. It took one moment to make them be spotlighted in a different way. As they waited they continued to do the work that they were called to in order to be prepared for the plans that God had for them.
If I would have waited for better circumstances to start I would have missed the prep season that I was in. I would have missed the learning and unlearning that needed to happen. The valuable lessons that I was able to gain didn't just become tools for me, but they became building blocks that were a part of the journey to encourage others.
So for every moment that I hesitated to move forward, I had to remember that this wasn't just about me. But that there was a story of how God can take what you have where you are and bring forth an expansion of your territory. God has a way of chnaging things and not allowing what was once considered to be ugly to leave a stain on the identity that He gave.
